Hearing

51.9K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Speech-Language Pathology

Background:

  • Children with learning disabilities often have auditory processing deficits.
  • Existing assessment tools may not be language-specific.
  • A need exists for culturally and linguistically appropriate auditory assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Binaural Fusion Test (BFT) in the Tamil language.
  • To provide a language-specific auditory assessment tool for Tamil-speaking children with learning disabilities.
  • To establish normative data for the BFT in Tamil.

Main Methods:

  • The BFT in Tamil was created with 100 words across four lists.
  • The test was administered to 84 children with normal auditory processing and 45 with learning difficulties.
  • Test-retest reliability was assessed in 30 children with normal auditory processing.

Main Results:

  • The BFT in Tamil demonstrated satisfactory test-retest reliability (Cronbach's Alpha).
  • A statistically significant difference was found in BFT scores between children with and without learning difficulties.
  • Novel normative data for the BFT in Tamil was established.

Conclusions:

  • The Tamil BFT is a reliable and valid tool for assessing binaural fusion.
  • This test can aid in identifying binaural interaction deficiencies in Tamil-speaking children.
  • The BFT in Tamil serves as a valuable component of the auditory processing disorder (CAPD) test battery.
