Fractures: Bone Repair

3.0K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Trauma Care

Background:

  • Talus fractures are uncommon, with specific types posing significant treatment challenges.
  • Road traffic accidents are a common cause of severe lower limb trauma requiring orthopedic intervention.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old male presented with severe right ankle and foot pain post-accident, unable to bear weight.
  • Imaging revealed complex talus fractures involving the head, neck, and dome, extending into the subtalar joint.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful open reduction and internal fixation using mini fragment plating and Herbert screw fixation.
  • Postoperative recovery was uncomplicated, with immobilization followed by a structured rehabilitation program.

Implications:

  • This case demonstrates the efficacy of surgical intervention for rare talus fractures.
  • Achieving excellent functional outcomes (AOFAS, FFI scores) is possible with appropriate management and rehabilitation.
