Summary

Orthobiologic treatments for osteoarthritis show varied results due to inconsistent post-procedure care reporting. Standardizing post-orthobiologic protocols is crucial for future research and clinical application in osteoarthritis management.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Osteoarthritis affects 500 million globally, posing a significant health burden.
  • Orthobiologics are explored for osteoarthritis symptom and disease modification.
  • Heterogeneity in orthobiologic treatment outcomes is noted in current literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the literature on orthobiologics for osteoarthritis.
  • To critically evaluate the reporting of postorthobiologic protocols in these studies.

Main Methods:

  • Scoping review of 200 identified studies meeting inclusion criteria.
  • Analysis of reported postorthobiologic protocols, including rehabilitation, weight-bearing restrictions, and medication use.

Main Results:

  • 37.5% of studies omitted postorthobiologic protocols.
  • Only 38.4% detailed rehabilitation, 21.6% mentioned weight-bearing restrictions.
  • Medication restrictions (NSAIDs, corticosteroids) were more consistently reported than physical protocols.

Conclusions:

  • Significant inconsistency exists in reporting postorthobiologic protocols.
  • This heterogeneity may explain varied treatment outcomes.
  • Standardized reporting of postorthobiologic care is needed for future osteoarthritis research.
