Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) introduced a new diagnostic model for personality disorders.
Implementation of this updated model requires validated assessment tools for clinical practice and research.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a brief, reliable, and valid scale for assessing maladaptive personality traits based on the ICD-11 model.
To adapt and utilize the item pool from the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory (IDCP-2) for this new scale.

Main Methods:

Item selection using quantitative and qualitative criteria from a sample of 251 Brazilian adults.
Validation of the scale's internal structure using a larger database of 1,659 Brazilian adults.
Assessment of validity based on relationships with external variables in a sample of 617 Brazilian adults.

Main Results:

A 25-item scale (five items per factor) was developed.
Promising evidence of validity based on internal structure was demonstrated.
Good evidence of validity based on relationships with external variables, including personality pathology, was found.

Conclusions:

The developed scale is a promising tool for assessing ICD-11 maladaptive personality traits.
The scale demonstrates reliability and validity, supporting its use in clinical settings.
Findings facilitate the adoption of the ICD-11 personality disorder model in research and practice.
