[Left ventricular diverticulum: a report of two cases].

    Summary

    This study found muscular left ventricular diverticulum (LVDC) is more common than previously thought, often appearing without other congenital anomalies. Two-dimensional echocardiography is a useful diagnostic tool for this rare cardiac malformation.

    Background:

    • Left ventricular diverticulum (LVDC) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation, classified as muscular or fibrous.
    • Muscular LVDCs are typically associated with thoracoabdominal defects and originate from the cardiac apex.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of muscular LVDC without other congenital anomalies were identified during a review of 3,000 left ventriculograms.
    • Both patients were male, with diverticula located on the inferior left ventricular wall and no associated symptoms.
    • Two-dimensional echocardiography successfully detected the diverticula in both cases.

    Findings:

    • Four cases of muscular LVDC were detected among 3,300 left ventriculograms, suggesting it is not as rare as previously believed.
    • Thallium myocardial imaging in one case showed a bulge corresponding to the diverticulum.
