Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Craniofacial Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Secondary cleft lip deformity can result in a shortened philtrum, reduced vermillion height, and excessive tooth visibility.
  • The Abbe flap is a recognized surgical technique for managing such deformities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the successful management of secondary cleft lip deformity using an Abbe lip-switch flap.
  • To evaluate the aesthetic outcomes and functional improvements.
  • To demonstrate the utility of resected philtral tissue for nasolabial fistula repair.

Main Methods:

  • A case study of a 33-year-old female with bilateral cleft lip and palate.
  • Surgical correction utilizing an Abbe lip-switch flap.
  • Anthropometric measurements for aesthetic assessment.
  • Evaluation of nasolabial fistula repair using resected oral mucosa.

Main Results:

  • Successful restoration of lip structure and function.
  • Significant improvement in facial aesthetics, supported by anthropometric data.
  • Effective closure of nasolabial fistulae using local oral mucosa.

Conclusions:

  • The Abbe lip-switch flap is a viable and effective treatment for secondary cleft lip deformities.
  • This approach can enhance both aesthetic appearance and lip function.
  • Repurposing resected tissue offers a dual benefit in reconstructive surgery.
