Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs01:05

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

14.6K
A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis III01:31

Pulmonary Tuberculosis III

1.8K
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection primarily affecting the lung parenchyma but which can also affect other body parts. TB can be classified based on disease development, presentation, and the affected anatomical site.
The first classification is based on the development of the disease, and it includes the following categories:

Infectious Diseases and Their Occurrence01:28

Infectious Diseases and Their Occurrence

94
Infectious diseases appear in populations through various transmission patterns, influenced by pathogen characteristics, population immunity, environmental conditions, and social behavior. Understanding these patterns is essential for effective public health surveillance and intervention. These categories—sporadic, outbreak, epidemic, pandemic, and endemic—help frame the nature and scope of disease events.Sporadic diseases occur irregularly and infrequently, without a predictable...

Investigation of Disease Outbreaks01:23

Investigation of Disease Outbreaks

74
Multistate foodborne outbreaks pose significant public health risks and require meticulous investigation to identify sources and implement control measures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) utilizes a dynamic seven-step process for these investigations, integrating data from laboratories, interviews, and environmental assessments to protect public health.Outbreak Detection: The detection of multistate outbreaks typically begins with PulseNet, the CDC's national laboratory...

Atypical Pneumonia01:14

Atypical Pneumonia

84
Atypical pneumonia, often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a form of pulmonary infection that differs from the classical presentation of bacterial pneumonia in both its cause and clinical symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pleomorphic bacterium notable for its lack of a rigid cell wall. This structural characteristic imparts resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and significantly influences the bacterium’s behavior within the human host.Other pathogens responsible for the disease...

Arboviral Encephalitis01:25

Arboviral Encephalitis

59
Arboviral encephalitis refers to brain inflammation caused by arthropod-borne viruses, particularly those transmitted through mosquito vectors. Among these, West Nile virus (WNV), a member of the Flaviviridae family, is a significant public health concern. WNV is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. Human infection typically begins when an infected mosquito introduces the virus into the dermis during feeding. The primary transmission cycle involves birds as amplifying hosts...

Summary

Monkeypox (mpox), a rare viral disease, presents with fever and rash. Early diagnosis is crucial, especially in travelers, as Pakistan had no reported cases before this unique patient presentation.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Virology

Background:

  • Monkeypox (mpox) is a rare zoonotic viral disease caused by the poxvirus.
  • It manifests with symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, and a distinctive rash.
  • Limited antiviral treatments and vaccines exist, necessitating stringent public health precautions.

Observation:

  • No mpox cases were reported in Pakistan as of April 17, 2023.
  • A 41-year-old male traveler returning from Saudi Arabia presented with a week-long history of nodular and pustular skin eruptions.
  • The patient's travel history and symptoms raised clinical suspicion for mpox.

Findings:

  • This case represents a potential early detection of mpox in Pakistan.
  • The clinical presentation aligns with known mpox symptoms, including the characteristic rash.

  • Diagnostic confirmation would be essential to confirm mpox in this patient.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of a high index of clinical suspicion for diagnosing infrequent diseases like mpox.
    • Underscores the need for enhanced surveillance and diagnostic capabilities for zoonotic viral diseases in Pakistan.
    • Informs public health strategies for managing and preventing the spread of mpox in non-endemic regions.
