    Background:

    • Spontaneous pneumothorax and mitral valve prolapse are conditions that may share underlying causes.
    • Investigating a potential link could improve understanding of connective tissue disorders.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the association between mitral valve prolapse and spontaneous pneumothorax.
    • To explore if these conditions are manifestations of a common connective tissue disorder.

    Main Methods:

    • Echocardiography was used to diagnose mitral valve prolapse.
    • Body mass index (BMI) was calculated for all participants.
    • Patients with spontaneous pneumothorax were compared to age-matched control subjects.

    Main Results:

    • Mitral valve prolapse was diagnosed in 50% of patients with spontaneous pneumothorax versus 10% in controls (p<0.01).
    • Patients with spontaneous pneumothorax had a significantly lower BMI (p<0.001).

    Conclusions:

    • A significant association exists between spontaneous pneumothorax and mitral valve prolapse.
    • This association is more pronounced in individuals with lower BMI and abnormal body build.
    • Findings suggest spontaneous pneumothorax may indicate a systemic connective tissue abnormality.
