Purpose of the Study:

  • To detail the adaptation and validation of a patient prompt list for localized prostate cancer patients.

  • A three-step process involving literature review, expert content evaluation (N=6), and patient usefulness assessment (N=30).
  • Content validity was assessed using item-level and scale-level content validity index (S-CVI).
  • A card sorting exercise with patients (N=3) and providers (N=2) was used for domain classification.

  • 20 out of 33 candidate questions were retained, achieving high content validity scores (I-CVI: 0.83-1.00, S-CVI: 0.96).
  • The final 20 questions were categorized into 5 domains: Treatment Options, Side Effects, Support, Logistics, and Future Health.
  • The prompt list was rated "useful or very useful" by 80% of patients for themselves and 83% for other prostate cancer patients.

Conclusions:

  • The participatory development and validation process provides a model for creating similar patient communication tools.
  • The validated prompt list can support shared decision-making in prostate cancer care.
  • Further development of patient-centered communication aids is supported by this research.
