Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology
  • Sensor Technology

Background:

  • Flexible and transparent sensors are crucial for advanced electronic applications.
  • Developing multifunctional sensors with high performance remains a challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To fabricate a cost-effective, multifunctional sensor with integrated UV photodetector and strain gauge capabilities.
  • To investigate the performance and stability of the sensor under various conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of silver nanowires (AgNWs) via the polyol method.
  • Fabrication of AgNW@ZnO nanorod (ZnONR) composite for multifunctional sensors using a hydrothermal method.
  • Optimization of ZnO nanorod size and deposition parameters for enhanced flexibility and performance.

Main Results:

  • The sensor achieved a high switching ratio of 1151 with fast response times (t_on: 2.7 s, t_off: 2.3 s) at 2000 μW/cm² UV power density.
  • Linear correlation observed between UV power density and maximum optical current.
  • Sensor performance showed a 164.3% increase in response current with bending from 15° to 90°.
  • Demonstrated excellent stability and repeatability with no degradation after 10,000 bending cycles.

Conclusions:

  • The multifunctional AgNW@ZnONR sensor exhibits promising potential for wearable electronic applications.
  • The cost-effective fabrication method and robust performance make it suitable for practical use.
  • The sensor's dual functionality (UV detection and strain sensing) opens new avenues for flexible electronics.
