Background:

Incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) is often discovered during histopathology of gallbladders removed for gallstones.
India has a high incidence of gallbladder cancer, making the management of iGBC a significant concern.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the current knowledge and management practices of incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) among surgeons in India.
To identify deficiencies in the understanding and application of iGBC management protocols.

Main Methods:

An online e-survey comprising 38 questions was distributed to surgeons in India.
Data from 230 responses were analyzed to document current practices and knowledge regarding iGBC.

Main Results:

A significant proportion of surgeons (68%) lacked a correct definition of true iGBC.
Practices varied widely, with only 32% correctly defining iGBC, and substantial percentages employing non-standard procedures for suspected iGBC.
While 95% of surgeons encountered iGBC annually, only 4.4% did not consider histopathology essential, highlighting a critical knowledge gap.

Conclusions:

There are significant gaps in the understanding and management of incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) among Indian surgeons.
The findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced awareness and education to improve iGBC management, particularly in high-incidence countries.
The situation may be more critical in regions with lower gallbladder cancer incidence due to potentially less exposure.
