The Batchelor-Grice extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis.

L C Hsu, D Jaffray, J C Leong

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. British Volume

    Summary

A novel extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis technique, merging Batchelor and Grice methods, achieved high fusion rates. This procedure effectively corrected valgus deformity in most patients, with one case of non-union due to infection.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Foot and Ankle Reconstruction

    Background:

    • Valgus deformity of the foot requires effective surgical correction.
    • Extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis aims to fuse the subtalar joint from outside the joint capsule.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe a new technique for extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of this combined technique in correcting valgus deformity and achieving solid fusion.

    Main Methods:

    • A novel surgical technique combining elements of the Batchelor and Grice procedures was employed.
    • Extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis was performed on 25 feet.
    • Patient outcomes were reviewed after a minimum of three years post-surgery.

    Main Results:

    • Solid fusion was achieved in 24 out of 25 treated feet.
    • Operative correction of the valgus deformity was maintained in the successfully fused cases.
    • One instance of non-union occurred, attributed to a deep infection.

    Conclusions:

    • The described extra-articular subtalar arthrodesis technique demonstrates a high success rate for achieving solid fusion.
    • This method is effective in correcting and maintaining correction of valgus foot deformities.
    • Deep infection remains a potential complication impacting fusion outcomes.
