Bone scans reveal transient uterine visualization in young women after menarche. This physiological finding is normal and occurs regardless of the menstrual cycle phase in postmenarchial females.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Radiology
    • Gynecologic Imaging

    Background:

    • Uterine visualization on bone scans has been variably reported.
    • Previous studies, such as those involving Meckel's scanning, suggested uterine uptake is phase-dependent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of uterine visualization during bone scintigraphy in adolescent and young adult females.
    • To determine if uterine uptake on bone scans is a normal physiological finding in postmenarchial women.

    Main Methods:

    • Biphasic and triphasic bone scans were performed on 29 postmenarchial adolescent and young adult females.
    • Control group included 12 patients (six males, six premenarchial females).
    • Pelvic activity on blood-pool images was assessed.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • All 29 studied females demonstrated transient uterine visualization in early phases of bone scans.
    • Uterine uptake was observed irrespective of the menstrual cycle phase.
    • No intrapelvic activity was noted in the control group.

    Conclusions:

    • Transient uterine visualization is a normal physiological finding in postmenarchial adolescent and young adult females undergoing bone scintigraphy.
    • This phenomenon is expected and not indicative of pathology.
    • The observation differs from phase-dependent uterine uptake reported in other scanning modalities.
