Background:

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions represent a leading global cause of disability.
Early intervention and management are crucial for mitigating MSK-related disability.
Technological advancements offer potential solutions for prevention and early-stage management.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a horizon scan of innovative technologies for early MSK condition prevention and management.
To create an evidence gap map (EGM) of these technologies.
To identify unmet needs in the MSK technology landscape.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive search of databases, clinical trial registries, funding portals, and company websites was performed in February 2024.
Records were screened for innovative devices or digital technologies aiding musculoskeletal health in adults.
Data on technology characteristics, delivery settings, and outcomes were coded, following Cochrane Rapid Reviews guidance.

Main Results:

109 relevant technologies were identified, with nearly half (49.5%) intended for home use.
Digital technologies (50.5%) or those with digital components (19.3%) dominated the innovation landscape.
The primary outcomes assessed were changes in pain and mobility.

Conclusions:

A significant trend towards home-based therapy provision for MSK conditions is evident.
Future research should broaden outcome assessments to capture the full impact of health technologies.
Understanding direct and wider impacts is essential for optimizing MSK care.
