    Background:

    • Autografts and homografts are traditional bone graft materials for facial augmentation.
    • Inert porous materials have been developed to promote scar tissue ingrowth for implant stabilization.
    • A need exists for alternative materials with improved biocompatibility and integration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of a bioactive, nonporous, transparent glass (Bioglass) as a graft material for facial bone augmentation.
    • To evaluate the tissue bonding capabilities and biocompatibility of Bioglass in a canine model.

    Main Methods:

    • Bioglass implants were placed in 18 dogs across three study groups (1, 3, and 6 months).
    • Implant integration was assessed by evaluating the bond to bone or soft tissue.
    • Histologic evaluation was performed to assess tissue response.

    Main Results:

    • Bioglass implants demonstrated successful bonding with bone or soft tissue in 54 out of 72 instances (75% success rate).
    • Failures were primarily associated with mobile chin implants and three cases of infection.
