Pore Size Distribution01:23

Pore Size Distribution

In concrete, the pore size distribution significantly influences the material's properties. Capillary pores, markedly larger than gel pores, form a vast network within partially hydrated cement paste, reducing the concrete's strength and increasing its permeability. This heightened permeability leads to a greater risk of damage from environmental factors like freeze-thaw cycles and chemical attacks, with the extent of vulnerability also being tied to the water-to-cement ratio.

Summary

Researchers created polymeric microsieves with elliptical pores using float-casting. While elliptical pores offer higher permeance, lower porosity due to particle packing reduced overall performance compared to circular pore microsieves.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Polymer Science
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Microsieves are crucial for separation processes.
  • Developing membranes with controlled pore geometry is essential for optimizing filtration performance.
  • Elliptical pores offer potential advantages over circular pores in specific applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prepare polymeric microsieves with submicrometric elliptical pores using a novel float-casting method.
  • To characterize the prepared microsieves, including pore dimensions and hierarchical structure.
  • To evaluate the filtration performance of the elliptical pore microsieves and compare them to those with circular pores.

Main Methods:

  • Float-casting of acrylate monomers and ellipsoidal polystyrene particles on water.
  • Lateral compression and photopolymerization to form a polymer membrane.
  • Dissolution of polystyrene particles to create elliptical pores.
  • Fabrication of a hierarchical structure with varying pore sizes.
  • Measurement of volumetric permeance for water filtration.

Main Results:

  • Successfully fabricated polymeric microsieves with elliptical pores (major axis ~0.87 μm, minor axis ~0.42 μm, aspect ratio ~2).
  • Developed a hierarchical microsieve structure with an overall porosity of 0.13.
  • Observed a volumetric permeance of 0.5·10^-6 m/s/Pa for water at a pressure difference of 10^3 Pa.
  • The performance (viscosity·permeance) was lower than similar microsieves with circular pores due to reduced porosity.

Conclusions:

  • Float-casting is an effective method for creating polymeric microsieves with precisely shaped elliptical pores.
  • The elliptical pore shape's potential benefits for permeance are counteracted by packing inefficiencies, leading to lower overall performance compared to circular pore counterparts.
  • This study provides insights into the design and fabrication of advanced filtration membranes with tailored pore geometries.
