Background:

The US faces a severe opioid epidemic with high rates of fatal overdoses.
Polysubstance use, particularly involving opioids with psychostimulants or benzodiazepines, complicates overdose prevention efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention in reducing fatal overdose deaths.
To assess the intervention's impact on overdose deaths involving specific drug combinations, including opioids with psychostimulants or benzodiazepines.

Main Methods:

A multisite, community-randomized controlled trial involving 67 communities across 4 US states (2020-2023).
Communities were randomized to receive the CTH intervention or serve as controls.

Scaling evidence-based practices through community engagement and communication campaigns is crucial for addressing the opioid crisis.
