Background:

Tinnitus, a phantom auditory perception, is increasingly recognized as a potential indicator of neurological health.
Understanding the link between tinnitus and cognitive decline is crucial for early dementia detection.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between a history of tinnitus and the subsequent risk of dementia diagnosis.
To explore age-specific risks related to tinnitus and dementia.

Main Methods:

A nationwide population-based case-control study was conducted in Taiwan.
15,686 adult participants were analyzed, with equal numbers in case (dementia) and control groups.

Main Results:

A history of tinnitus was linked to a statistically significant 168% increased risk of dementia diagnosis in individuals aged 50-65 years (aOR 2.68, p=0.017).
No significant association between tinnitus history and dementia risk was found in individuals aged 65 and older (aOR 1.17, p=0.235).

Conclusions:

Tinnitus history is a significant risk factor for dementia in middle-aged adults (50-65 years).
The association between tinnitus and dementia risk appears to be age-dependent, with a stronger link in younger age groups.
