    Summary

    Thoracic venous collateral circulation seen on chest CT scans may be a transient finding. Arm hyperabduction during CT can cause temporary subclavian vein obstruction, leading to visible collateral channels.

    Background:

    • Thoracic venous collateral circulation can be an incidental finding on computed tomography (CT) scans.
    • The underlying cause for such findings is not always clear, and venous obstruction is often suspected.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential cause of transient thoracic venous collateral circulation observed during chest CT.
    • To determine if patient positioning during CT can influence venous visualization.

    • Retrospective review of four patients with thoracic venous collateral circulation on chest CT.
    • Clinical and CT data were analyzed for evidence of venous obstruction.
    • Repeat CT was performed on one patient after repositioning arms from hyperabduction to an anatomic position.
