A new dialogue tool was developed for emerging adults (ages 16-25) to express health strengths and needs. This tool, the My Positive Health (MPH) dialogue tool, supports resilience and collaboration across healthcare, social care, and school settings.
Area of Science:
- Health psychology
- Adolescent and emerging adult health
- Patient-centered care tools
Background:
- Emerging adulthood (ages 16-25) is a critical developmental period characterized by significant health-related transitions.
- The ability to articulate health strengths and needs is crucial for building resilience during this phase.
- Existing health dialogue tools may not adequately address the unique needs of emerging adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a specialized version of the My Positive Health (MPH) dialogue tool tailored for emerging adults (ages 16-25).
- To create a tool promoting integrated collaboration across healthcare, social care, and educational settings.
- To enhance resilience by enabling young individuals to express and address their health-related strengths and needs.
Main Methods:
- Co-design methodology involving end-users throughout the development process.
- Mixed-methods approach including a cross-sectional survey (N=118) and qualitative focus groups/interviews (N=36).
- Stratification of Dutch participants by educational level and chronic disease status; final content selection by expert sessions.
Main Results:
- Key dimensions identified for the dialogue tool: My body, My feelings and thoughts, Meaningfulness, Quality of life, Participation, and Daily life.
- Operationalization into 43 aspects, including newly formulated elements specific to emerging adulthood such as 'Confidence in yourself', 'Being in control', and 'Ability to plan'.
- Integration of aspects from existing adult and children's MPH dialogue tool versions.
Conclusions:
- A co-designed dialogue tool, the My Positive Health (MPH) tool for emerging adults, has been successfully developed.
- The tool is applicable to individuals aged 16-25 with diverse health and vulnerability profiles.
- It is designed for use across multiple domains, facilitating communication and support for young people's health.
