    Background:

    • Repetitive physical impact from long-distance running may affect bone health and joint conditions.
    • Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are significant concerns in aging populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between long-term running and osteoarthritis and osteoporosis in older adults.
    • To compare bone mineral content and radiographic joint changes in runners versus non-runners.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study comparing 41 long-distance runners (50-72 years) with 41 matched community controls.
    • Radiographic assessment of hands, lumbar spine, and knees.
    • Quantitative computed tomography (CT) scan of the first lumbar vertebra for bone mineral content.

    Main Results:

    • Runners exhibited approximately 40% higher bone mineral content than controls.
    • Female runners showed increased spinal and knee sclerosis and spur formation, but not in hands.
    • No significant differences were observed in joint space narrowing, crepitation, joint stability, or symptomatic osteoarthritis.

    Conclusions:

    • Long-distance running is associated with enhanced bone mineral density in older adults.
    • This study did not find evidence linking long-term running to clinical osteoarthritis.
    • Running may be beneficial for bone health without increasing the risk of symptomatic osteoarthritis.
