    Summary

    Stadol (butorphanol tartrate) administration during labor is strongly linked to a transient sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern in newborns. This pattern, however, did not indicate fetal hypoxia in the absence of other distress signs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To test the hypothesis that Stadol (butorphanol tartrate) administration to mothers does not result in a sinusoidal fetal heart rate pattern.
    • To evaluate the incidence and duration of sinusoidal fetal heart rate patterns following Stadol use during labor.

    • Review of 119 fetal heart rate monitor tracings from term-pregnant patients in labor.
    • Independent interpretation of tracings by two observers to assess agreement.
