    Summary

Silicone gel implants used in augmentation mammaplasty may be linked to chronic joint disease. This study suggests a potential connection between these implants, especially with capsular contractures, and the development of arthropathy.

    Area of Science:

    • Plastic Surgery
    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Augmentation mammaplasty, a common cosmetic procedure, involves the use of silicone gel implants.
    • Previous research has indicated potential associations between breast implants and various systemic and autoimmune conditions.

    Observation:

    • This report details three cases where patients developed chronic arthropathy.
    • These cases involved silicone gel implants for augmentation mammaplasty, complicated by capsular contractures.

    Findings:

    • A potential relationship is suggested between silicone gel augmentation mammaplasty and the onset of chronic arthropathy.
    • Capsular contractures may be a complicating factor in this association.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Further investigation is warranted to confirm a causal link between silicone gel implants and chronic arthropathy.
    • This finding may inform patient counseling and surgical considerations for augmentation mammaplasty.
