Background:

  • Ultrasound (US) is a recognized method for verifying peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) tip placement in neonates.
  • Current US application for PICC guidance may be limited by the expertise required.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of a newly developed standardized US protocol for guiding PICC placement.
  • To compare the accuracy of standardized US assessments with radiographic controls.

  • An expert panel developed a standardized US protocol for PICC tip assessment.
  • 262 US examinations of PICC lines were conducted in a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) using the protocol.
