    Background:

    • Subglottic foreign bodies pose a diagnostic challenge, often presenting with symptoms similar to common childhood respiratory illnesses like croup or asthma.
    • Delayed diagnosis of impacted subglottic foreign bodies can lead to significant upper airway obstruction and respiratory distress.

    Observation:

    • Six pediatric patients with impacted subglottic foreign bodies were analyzed for their clinical and roentgenologic features.
    • In a majority of cases (4 out of 6), parents did not witness the initial aspiration event, complicating early diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • Roentgenologic examination revealed characteristic subglottic narrowing of the airway.
    • A homogeneous, poorly defined radiodensity was consistently observed within the narrowed segment, indicating the presence of a foreign body.

    Implications:

    • Soft-tissue upper airway roentgenography is a valuable diagnostic tool for identifying subglottic foreign bodies.
    • In cases of unexplained stridor in infants and young children, prompt roentgenographic evaluation is strongly indicated to rule out foreign body aspiration.
