Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Simulation

Background:

  • Evisceration surgery is a crucial ophthalmological skill, yet infrequently performed, necessitating effective training methods.
  • Traditional training may not adequately prepare ophthalmologists for evisceration due to its rarity.
  • Mixed reality (MR) offers immersive training by blending real and virtual environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To enhance participants' anatomical knowledge, procedural steps, and confidence in evisceration surgery.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of an extended reality (XR) online webinar combined with conventional teaching.

Main Methods:

  • A 90-minute session included a lecture on evisceration and MR technology (Microsoft HoloLens).
  • A 3D orbital/globe demonstration and live porcine cadaver evisceration were presented via the MR headset.
  • Interactive elements included expert commentary, virtual anatomical signposts, and shared on-screen annotations.

Main Results:

  • Ten doctors (FY1 to Ophthalmology ST3) participated.
  • Statistically significant improvements were observed in knowledge, understanding of steps, and confidence post-session.
  • Pre- and post-session questionnaires using 5-point Likert scales demonstrated these gains.

Conclusions:

  • Mixed reality integrated with conventional teaching provides a valuable initial learning experience for evisceration surgery.
  • This MR approach can effectively supplement traditional wet-lab or patient-based surgical training.
  • The study highlights MR's potential to improve surgical competency in uncommon procedures.
