Insights
Saudi Arabia faces an obesity pandemic impacting cardiovascular disease (CVD). This statement offers Saudi Heart Association recommendations for managing obesity in CVD patients, emphasizing effective weight reduction strategies.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
- Public Health
Background:
- Obesity is a significant public health issue in Saudi Arabia.
- Obesity is strongly linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide evidence-based recommendations from the Saudi Heart Association.
- To guide the management of obesity in patients with CVD in Saudi Arabia.
Main Methods:
- A multidisciplinary expert panel of cardiologists and endocrinologists convened.
- Reviewed existing evidence and local expertise on obesity and CVD management.
- Discussions took place between September 2023 and May 2024.
Main Results:
- The association between obesity and CVD is well-established.
- Weight reduction interventions (lifestyle, pharmacotherapy, surgery) are effective for weight loss and CVD prevention.
- Guidance for managing obesity/overweight in CVD patients in Saudi Arabia is provided.
Conclusions:
- Effective management of obesity is crucial for primary and secondary CVD prevention.
- This position statement aims to improve obesity and CVD prevention efforts in Saudi Arabia.
- Promoting timely and appropriate treatment for obesity and CVD is essential.
Objectives:
The obesity pandemic is a major public health concern in Saudi Arabia, with significant impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD). This position statement aims to provide an overview of available evidence as well as the recommendations of the Saudi Heart Association on the management of obesity associated with CVD.
Methods:
Under the auspices of the Saudi Heart Association, a multidisciplinary expert panel comprised of cardiologists and endocrinologists discussed available evidence and provided recommendations on the management of obesity in CVD. The expert panel discussions occurred between September of 2023 and May of 2024 and also took into consideration local expertise in addition to published data in the management of obesity and CVD in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Results And Conclusions:
The expert panel explored studies on obesity and its implication on CVD assessment modalities, while also examining the efficacy and cardiovascular safety of available interventions for weight reduction. The association between obesity and CVD is undeniable. The treatment of obesity, be it through lifestyle changes, pharmacological therapy or surgery, is an effective strategy for both weight loss as well as the primary and secondary prevention of CVD. The Saudi Heart Association position statement thus provides guidance and recommendations for the management of obesity/overweight and CVD in Saudi Arabia. This position statement is expected to contribute towards obesity and CVD prevention efforts in Saudi Arabia by promoting adequate and time-appropriate treatment of these conditions.

Obesity
Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
