    Summary

    Tympanometry can predict middle ear effusion, but discrepancies exist. This study classified tympanograms into risk levels, finding high-risk ears consistently had effusion, while low-risk ears showed unexpected fluid presence, possibly due to reinfection.

    Background:

    • Middle ear effusion (MEE) diagnosis often relies on tympanometry.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the discrepancy between preoperative tympanometry findings and surgical confirmation of middle ear effusion.
    • To develop a risk stratification system for tympanograms regarding MEE presence.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 462 children (aged 4-8 years) with clinical evidence of persistent MEE were studied.
    • Preoperative tympanograms were compared with intraoperative findings in 909 ears.
    • Tympanograms were categorized into high, intermediate, and low risk for effusion.
