Background:

Suicidal hanging is a significant public health concern in Pakistan and globally.
Understanding the demographics, methods, and risk factors associated with hanging suicides is crucial for prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the characteristics of suicidal hangings reported in Pakistani English-language newspapers.
To identify prevalent methods, risk factors, and demographic profiles of individuals who died by hanging suicide.

Main Methods:

Content analysis of 124 news reports on suicidal hangings.
Data collected from six English-language newspapers in Pakistan.
Timeframe: January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022.

Main Results:

The majority of individuals were males (68.5%), Muslim (69.4%), and aged 16-30 years.
Commonly used ligatures included ropes (28.2%) and fabrics (20.9%).
Ceiling fans (37%) were the most frequent leverage points; familial discord (19.2%) and poverty (9.6%) were leading risk factors.

Conclusions:

Psychological interventions targeting families are essential for suicide prevention.
Addressing socioeconomic factors like poverty is critical to reducing hanging suicide rates in Pakistan.
