    Background:

    • Broca's aphasia, a language disorder resulting from brain damage, often affects speech production.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the on-line compensatory articulation abilities in individuals with Broca's aphasia using a vowel bite block task.
    • To correlate clinical, experimental, and neurological measures to understand factors influencing compensatory articulation.
    • To explore the relationship between brain lesion location and compensatory articulation skills.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirteen Broca's aphasia patients performed a vowel bite block task.
    • Acoustic analysis of formant frequencies (F1, F2) was conducted using pitch-synchronous spectral analysis.

    • Individuals with Broca's aphasia exhibit altered compensatory articulation, particularly in vowel production.
    • Compensatory articulation ability is significantly associated with the severity of oral apraxia and overall aphasia.
    • Preliminary findings suggest that an intact Area 44 may be necessary for effective compensatory articulation in Broca's aphasia.
