This study presents a novel starch-based foam packaging for controlled release of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). This sustainable active packaging extends fruit shelf life by reducing spoilage and physical damage during transport.
Area of Science:
- Food Science and Technology
- Materials Science
- Agricultural Engineering
Background:
- Fruit spoilage during long-distance transport is a major challenge.
- 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) effectively inhibits ethylene and slows ripening, but its controlled release is difficult with current materials.
- Existing carriers like paper, chitosan, and microcapsules are unsatisfactory for 1-MCP delivery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an innovative and sustainable active packaging system for controlled 1-MCP release.
- To improve fruit freshness preservation during long-distance transportation.
- To enhance the shelf life and quality of climacteric fruits.
Main Methods:
- Development of a "sandwich" structured packaging using starch-based foam sheets.
- Utilizing the hydrophilic and porous properties of the foam for controlled 1-MCP release.
- Assessing the mechanical durability for physical damage protection during transport.
Main Results:
- Achieved significant reductions in ethylene production (up to 60.49%) and respiration rates (up to 57.50%).
- Extended the shelf life of climacteric fruits by 5-10 days.
- Demonstrated effective cushioning to minimize physical damage.
Conclusions:
- The novel starch-based foam packaging provides a controllable and slow release of 1-MCP.
- This active packaging system effectively prolongs fruit shelf life and maintains quality.
- The packaging is economical, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable.

Molecular Weight of Step-Growth Polymers
As the step-growth polymerization involves step-wise condensation of monomers, the molecular weight also builds up eventually. Consequently, high molecular weight polymers are obtained at the late stages of the polymerization, where 99% of monomers have been consumed.

Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the...
