Background:

Traditional caseworker training often lacks practical, real-world simulation.
The need for accessible and scalable training solutions is critical for new child welfare professionals.
Videoconferencing offers a potential method to deliver remote simulation experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the first statewide videoconference-based simulation training program for new caseworkers in Illinois.
To assess changes in caseworker confidence and skill acquisition.
To gather trainee feedback on the quality of instruction and learning experience.

Main Methods:

A statewide simulation training program utilizing a mock house and standardized clients was implemented.
Trainees participated remotely via videoconference.
A survey assessed trainee confidence in 14 skills at multiple timepoints, feedback quality, and learning experiences through quantitative ratings and text responses.

Main Results:

Statistically significant linear increases in trainee confidence were observed across all 14 assessed skills.
Trainee feedback indicated appreciation for the provided feedback and a perceived gain in various skills.
Quantitative and qualitative data supported the program's positive impact on skill development.

Conclusions:

Videoconference-based simulation training is a valued and effective component of caseworker certification.
This innovative training model enhances professional skills and confidence for new caseworkers.
Remote simulation training demonstrates feasibility and success in statewide implementation.
