People are held more responsible when they are harder to replace. Our counterfactual replacement model quantifies how the difficulty of replacing someone influences judgments of responsibility.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Decision Making
Background:
- Responsibility judgments depend on actual events and potential alternative outcomes.
- The concept of 'replaceability' influences how individuals assess blame and accountability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of an individual's replaceability on judgments of responsibility.
- To develop and validate a quantitative model predicting responsibility based on counterfactual replaceability.
Main Methods:
- Developed the counterfactual replacement model to simulate alternative scenarios and assess outcome changes.
- Designed experimental paradigms to systematically manipulate replaceability (number of replacements, availability probability).
- Tested the model's predictions across three experiments in social and physical contexts.
Main Results:
- A person's responsibility is positively correlated with the difficulty of replacing them.
- The counterfactual replacement model accurately predicts human responsibility judgments.
- The model outperforms alternative approaches focusing solely on actual events.
Conclusions:
- Replaceability is a key factor in determining responsibility.
- The counterfactual replacement model provides a robust framework for understanding responsibility attribution.
- This research offers insights into social cognition and decision-making processes.
