Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Education
  • Clinical Skills Assessment
  • Restorative Dentistry

Background:

  • Analytical rubrics guide clinical performance for undergraduate dental students.
  • This study evaluates a rubric for Class II composite restorations.
  • It explores gender impact and CGPA correlation on student performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Assess the effectiveness of an analytical rubric for evaluating Class II composite restorations.
  • Investigate gender-based differences in clinical performance.
  • Examine the relationship between cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and clinical performance.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized an analytical rubric for Class II composite restorations over two academic years (2022/2023, 2023/2024).
  • Two trained evaluators used a 4-point scale across five parameters (pre-op, cavity prep, restoration, time management, oral exam).
  • Statistical analyses included t-tests, Kappa test, and Pearson's correlation to compare scores and assess agreement/associations.

Main Results:

  • Overall scores showed a slight, non-significant increase for females over males in both academic years.
  • Female students significantly outperformed males in pre-operative procedures and time management (p<0.05).
  • Evaluator agreement ranged from moderate to substantial; strong correlations existed between CGPA and clinical parameters (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Dental students demonstrated very good overall clinical performance, with marginal advantages for females.
  • Identified performance variations between genders and moderate-to-substantial agreement among evaluators.
  • Clinical performance showed similar trends across students with varying CGPAs.
