Summary

Estimating elbow eccentric (ECC) muscle strength is challenging. This study found that elbow isometric (ISO) flexion strength, especially when combined with muscle thickness, can accurately predict ECC strength in athletes.

Background:

  • Accurate measurement of maximal isokinetic eccentric (ECC) muscle strength is difficult in field settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if elbow isometric (ISO) flexion muscle strength can estimate elbow ECC flexion muscle strength.
  • To investigate the added value of muscle thickness (MT) in estimating elbow ECC flexion muscle strength.

Main Methods:

  • 147 healthy adults (99 males, 48 females) participated.
  • Maximal isometric and eccentric elbow flexion strength were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer.
  • Elbow flexor muscle thickness was measured via ultrasound.

Main Results:

  • Multiple regression analysis showed a high coefficient of determination (R²=0.89).
  • Elbow isometric flexion strength was a significant predictor (standardized coefficient β=0.94).
  • Muscle thickness also showed a significant association (standardized coefficient β=0.07), improving estimation accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Elbow isometric flexion strength can reliably estimate elbow eccentric flexion strength.
  • Incorporating muscle thickness enhances the accuracy of estimating eccentric muscle strength.
  • These findings offer a practical approach for assessing elbow flexor strength in sports environments.
