Obedience01:08

Obedience

32.8K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Bystander Effect

9.5K
The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

SBAR is an effective communication tool used by healthcare professionals to communicate patient information accurately. SBAR stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. For a better understanding, an example is given below.
SBAR Report from a Nurse to a Health Care Provider

Summary

Workplace violence (WPV) affects health care workers (HCWs) in the emergency department (ED) every 3.7 shifts. Nurses and younger HCWs face higher risks, underscoring the need for targeted interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Occupational Health
  • Healthcare Worker Safety

Background:

  • Workplace violence (WPV) against health care workers (HCWs) is prevalent but often underreported.
  • There is a lack of reliable data on the incidence and impact of WPV on HCWs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of WPV against HCWs in the emergency department (ED).
  • To identify demographic factors associated with increased WPV risk.
  • To explore the impact of WPV on HCWs.

Main Methods:

  • A 2-month cross-sectional study in a large, urban academic hospital's ED.
  • HCWs (physicians, nurses) completed shift sheets to record WPV events.
  • Data collected included event type, severity, bias, and perceived impact; multivariable logistic regression analyzed risk factors.

Main Results:

  • HCWs experienced WPV every 3.7 shifts; 155 events were recorded.
  • Verbal abuse (type 1) was most common (50%), followed by physical violence (type 3, 25%).
  • Nurses (OR, 3.1) and HCWs aged 40 or younger (OR, 2.0) had a higher likelihood of experiencing WPV.

Conclusions:

  • HCWs in the ED experience frequent WPV, with nurses and younger staff at higher risk.
  • The findings highlight an urgent need for interventions to protect HCWs.
  • Addressing WPV is critical for maintaining a safe healthcare environment.
