Background:

Health care programs, including veterinary medicine, utilize practicum rotations.
Community-based rotations in remote areas offer learning benefits but can be stressful without adequate support.
Veterinary students in Canada participate in rotations in remote Indigenous communities.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore support systems for veterinary students during remote Indigenous community rotations in Canada.
To identify factors contributing to student well-being and learning in these settings.

Main Methods:

Online surveys were administered to veterinary students who participated in a 4-week rotation in the Northwest Territories.
The study included 11 out of 20 students who participated between 2015 and 2020.
The rotation involved providing veterinary services to companion animals in remote communities.

Main Results:

Students reported feeling welcomed and supported by the Indigenous communities they served.
Participants felt well-supported by and connected to their veterinary teams.
Positive experiences were linked to community relationships and team dynamics.

Conclusions:

Building strong community relationships is crucial for supporting veterinary students.
Effective team selection and supportive team dynamics enhance student experiences.
Implementing debriefing and decompression activities is vital for student well-being during rotations.
