Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

7.3K
Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in...

Stimulants01:29

Stimulants

160
Stimulants are substances that enhance neural activity and elevate dopamine levels in the brain, leading to their highly addictive nature. These drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, caffeine, and nicotine, each with distinct mechanisms of action and varied health implications.
Cocaine can be administered via snorting, injection, or smoking. It primarily functions by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in a euphoric high characterized by an intense sensation of happiness and...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

26
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

121
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.9K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Adolescence is a vulnerable period for tobacco use initiation.
  • Despite known risks, adolescent tobacco use remains prevalent.
  • Games for health offer a promising strategy for tobacco prevention through engagement and behavior change.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Compare the social game Storm-Heroes to a nonsocial program for adolescent experiences.
  • Examine how these experiences predict tobacco knowledge and perceived risks of vaping and conventional tobacco use.

Main Methods:

  • A cluster-randomized comparative design involving 79 adolescents across 4 after-school sites.
  • Interventions included the social game Storm-Heroes and a nonsocial program (ASPIRE).
  • Data collected at baseline, immediate, and 1.5-month follow-ups using repeated measures mixed effects models.

Main Results:

  • Storm-Heroes participants showed increased perceived risk of vaping and conventional tobacco use, and higher tobacco knowledge compared to the control group.
  • Program usability and attention positively correlated with higher perceived risks of vaping and conventional tobacco use.
  • Greater attention and less distraction were associated with increased tobacco knowledge.

Conclusions:

  • The Storm-Heroes program successfully enhanced adolescents' perceived risks of tobacco and vaping and their knowledge.
  • Minimizing distraction during program engagement is crucial for improving tobacco knowledge outcomes.
  • Further development of Storm-Heroes can enhance engagement and its potential for preventing adolescent tobacco initiation.
