    Summary

    Screening pregnant women for Chlamydia trachomatis and treating infections late in pregnancy effectively prevents neonatal transmission. This approach showed no adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes.

    Background:

    • Chlamydia trachomatis is a common sexually transmitted cervical pathogen.
    • Neonatal Chlamydia infection can cause conjunctivitis and pneumonitis.
    • Cervical Chlamydia infection is linked to premature rupture of membranes and delivery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of Chlamydia trachomatis in perinatal complications.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of late-pregnancy treatment in preventing neonatal transmission.

    Main Methods:

    • Pregnant women were screened for Chlamydia in early pregnancy.
    • Positive cases were treated with erythromycin at 36 weeks' gestation.
    • Infants were monitored postpartum for signs of infection and cultured.

    Main Results:

    • 14.9% of women screened positive for Chlamydia trachomatis.
    • No significant differences in pregnancy or neonatal complications were observed between infected and uninfected groups.
