Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused01:20

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

61
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory01:20

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory

175
Cognitive psychologist Richard Lazarus proposed the cognitive-mediational theory of emotions, which emphasizes how individuals' assessments of stressors significantly affect their experience of stress. According to Lazarus, the stress response is determined by a two-step appraisal process: primary appraisal and secondary appraisal. These cognitive appraisals help individuals evaluate the potential impact of a stressor and determine the adequacy of their coping resources.

Decision Making01:20

Decision Making

92
Decision-making is a fundamental cognitive process that involves evaluating alternatives and selecting among them. This process can range from simple choices, such as deciding what to wear, to complex decisions, like choosing a major in college or a career path. The complexity of the decision often dictates the approach we use, which can be broadly categorized into two types: automatic and controlled decision-making.
Automatic decision-making is fast, intuitive, and relies on gut feelings...

Cognitive Theories: Schachter-Singer Theory of Emotion

287
Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer proposed the two-factor theory of emotion, which emphasizes the interplay between physiological arousal and cognitive labeling in forming emotional experiences. This theory suggests that emotions are not simply a result of physiological responses but rather a combination of these responses and the individual's cognitive interpretation of them.

Physiology of Emotion01:20

Physiology of Emotion

598
The physiology of emotions is a multifaceted process involving the autonomic nervous system, brain structures, hormones, and neurotransmitters. This intricate interplay dictates how emotions manifest in the body and influence behavior.
Autonomic Nervous System
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a critical role in emotional responses by regulating involuntary physiological functions. It consists of two main components: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system...

Summary

Poor emotion regulation is linked to procrastination. This study found that gray matter volume in the right dorsal-lateral prefrontal cortex and its connectivity with the insula are key neural factors influencing this relationship.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Procrastination has detrimental effects across life domains.
  • A negative correlation exists between emotional regulation and procrastination, but its neural basis is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural substrates underlying the relationship between emotion regulation and procrastination.
  • To explore the roles of gray matter volume and functional connectivity in this association.

Main Methods:

  • Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) were used.
  • The study included 243 participants.

Main Results:

  • Emotion regulation ability negatively correlated with procrastination.
  • Gray matter volume in the right dorsal-lateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) positively correlated with emotion regulation ability.
  • Right dlPFC-left insula functional connectivity positively correlated with emotion regulation ability.
  • Emotion regulation ability mediated the relationship between right dlPFC gray matter volume and procrastination.
  • Emotion regulation ability mediated the relationship between right dlPFC-left insula functional connectivity and procrastination.

Conclusions:

  • The neural pathway for cognitive control over negative emotions underlies the link between emotion regulation and procrastination.
  • Findings offer a novel perspective on the emotion regulation-procrastination association.
