Ghost cell glaucoma (GCG) can occur after eye surgery or trauma. This study reports GCG in a diabetic retinopathy patient without prior issues, managed successfully with anterior chamber irrigation.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Glaucoma Studies
    • Diabetic Retinopathy Research

    Background:

    • Ghost cell glaucoma (GCG) is a known complication following ocular surgeries and trauma.
    • Diabetic retinopathy is a common cause of vitreous hemorrhage, potentially leading to secondary glaucoma.

    Observation:

    • GCG developed in a phakic (natural lens present) eye without prior ocular surgery or trauma.
    • The patient had vitreous hemorrhage secondary to diabetic retinopathy.

    Findings:

    • A spontaneous rupture of the anterior hyaloid face is postulated as the cause of ghost cell migration into the anterior chamber.
    • Recurrent GCG post-vitrectomy was effectively managed by anterior chamber irrigation, avoiding a second vitrectomy.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • This case expands the known causes of GCG to include spontaneous hyaloid face rupture in diabetic retinopathy.
    • Anterior chamber irrigation is presented as a primary, effective treatment for GCG following vitrectomy.
