    Summary

This case report highlights progressive pulmonary interstitial fibrosis linked to adjuvant lomustine (CCNU) and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy for colon cancer. Lomustine therapy may cause lung damage, necessitating careful patient monitoring.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pulmonology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, including lomustine (CCNU) and 5-fluorouracil, are utilized in colon carcinoma treatment.
    • Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis is a serious potential complication of certain chemotherapeutic agents.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed progressive pulmonary interstitial fibrosis after receiving adjuvant lomustine and 5-fluorouracil for colon carcinoma.
    • Clinical, radiological, and histological findings suggest a strong association between lomustine administration and the observed lung damage.

    Findings:

    • The presented case indicates a potential link between lomustine (CCNU) therapy and the development of pulmonary interstitial fibrosis.
    • This adverse pulmonary event occurred in the context of adjuvant treatment for colon cancer.

    Implications:

    • Pulmonary toxicity should be considered a possible adverse effect of lomustine therapy.
    • Clinicians should be vigilant for respiratory symptoms in patients undergoing lomustine treatment.
    • Further investigation into the mechanisms of lomustine-induced lung injury is warranted.
