Uncertainty in Measurement: Accuracy and Precision

Scientists typically make repeated measurements of a quantity to ensure the quality of their findings and to evaluate both the precision and the accuracy of their results. Measurements are said to be precise if they yield very similar results when repeated in the same manner. A measurement is considered accurate if it yields a result that is very close to the true or the accepted value. Precise values agree with each other; accurate values agree with a true value.

Endoscopic Procedures V: ERCP

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions related to the bile ducts, pancreatic ducts, and gallbladder. This procedure is beneficial for identifying and addressing blockages, gallstones, strictures, and tumors within the biliary or pancreatic systems. ERCP is both diagnostic and therapeutic, offering the ability to visualize and treat identified problems in one session.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Competency-Based Education

Background:

  • Information and data are driving advancements in medical education.
  • Competency-based medical education (CBME) requires robust assessment methods.
  • Precision education offers a data-driven approach to tailor learning experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the application of precision surgical education in assessing surgeon reliability.
  • To evaluate precision education's role in meeting minimum reliability standards for future surgeons.
  • To examine precision education as a strategy for enhancing resident career trajectories.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review on precision education and CBME.
  • Analysis of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) in surgical training.
  • Discussion of data-driven assessment models in surgical residency.

Main Results:

  • Precision education can provide objective data for assessing surgical skills.
  • It offers a framework for evaluating adherence to minimum reliability standards.
  • The approach aligns with the principles of EPAs for targeted feedback and progression.

Conclusions:

  • Precision surgical education is a viable strategy for enhancing CBME.
  • It supports the reliable assessment of future surgeons.
  • This model can strengthen resident career development and training outcomes.
