    Summary

    Cold exposure causes heart abnormalities in systemic sclerosis patients. Nifedipine medication significantly reduces the severity of these cold-induced cardiac issues, improving left ventricular function.

    Background:

    • Systemic sclerosis and CREST syndrome frequently present with Raynaud's phenomenon and cardiac abnormalities.
    • Left ventricular dysfunction is a potential complication in these patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate cold-induced changes in left ventricular function in patients with systemic sclerosis and related conditions.
    • To assess the protective effect of nifedipine on cold-induced myocardial dysfunction.

    Main Methods:

    • Radionuclide ventriculography was performed on 16 patients and 11 healthy volunteers during cold exposure.
    • Left ventricular regional wall motion was assessed before and after nifedipine administration during cooling.
