Multi-input and Multi-variable systems

Cruise control systems in cars are designed as multi-input systems to maintain a driver's desired speed while compensating for external disturbances such as changes in terrain. The block diagram for a cruise control system typically includes two main inputs: the desired speed set by the driver and any external disturbances, such as the incline of the road. By adjusting the engine throttle, the system maintains the vehicle's speed as close to the desired value as possible.

Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Aerospace Simulation

Background:

  • Enhancing situation awareness (SA) is crucial for flight simulator operations.
  • Existing Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) interfaces may not fully support driver SA requirements.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and evaluate a design and evaluation method for flight simulator HCI interfaces grounded in SA.
  • To improve driver SA cognitive levels during simulated flight operations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Endsley's SA model and a three-level information processing model.
  • Analyzed flight, cruise, and landing scenarios to restructure HCI information architecture.
  • Developed a self-assessment scale for SA cognitive levels and gathered driver requirements through surveys.
  • Iteratively designed and evaluated the HCI interface with participants in simulated driving sessions.

Main Results:

  • Identified key design features of HCI interfaces associated with high SA cognitive levels.
  • Synthesized these features into four distinct dimensions for guided design.
  • The finalized HCI interface design significantly improved participants' SA cognitive levels compared to the original design.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed SA-grounded HCI interface design method effectively enhances situation awareness in flight simulators.
  • This approach offers a structured framework for developing more effective and intuitive flight simulator interfaces.
