Background:

The link between depression and homicide remains under-explored in clinical psychiatry.
This study investigates the characteristics differentiating homicidal depressed patients from non-homicidal depressed individuals.

Observation:

Six homicidal depressed patients were compared with non-homicidal depressed controls.
Data from 81 case summaries in existing literature were also analyzed.

Findings:

Homicidal depressed patients were more prone to personality disorders.
Childhood physical abuse, alcohol or drug abuse, and suicidal ideation were more prevalent in homicidal depressed patients.
Sexual infidelity, real or fantasized, was a more common trigger for depression in homicidal patients.
