    Summary

    Immediate asthmatic responses (IARs) to allergen bronchial challenge are a significant indicator of allergic asthma. While IARs are reproducible, other diagnostic markers show limited correlation, suggesting they are supplementary.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic significance of immediate asthmatic responses (IARs) in patients with suspected allergic asthma.
    • To assess the correlation between IARs and other diagnostic parameters.

    Main Methods:

    • 103 bronchial asthma patients underwent bronchial challenge with allergen.
    • Immediate asthmatic responses (IARs) were recorded and analyzed.
    • Correlation with skin tests, serum IgE, IgG, IgM, IgA, blood eosinophilia, leukocytosis, bronchial reactivity to histamine, and patient-reported symptoms was assessed.

    Main Results:

    • 133 positive IARs were observed, occurring rapidly and resolving within 120 minutes.
    • IARs demonstrated high significance (p < .01) and reproducibility with a dose-response relationship.
    • Correlations with other diagnostic parameters like skin response, total IgE, and specific IgE were not consistently satisfactory.

    Conclusions:

    • Immediate asthmatic response (IAR) is a valuable diagnostic parameter for identifying immediate hypersensitivity in the bronchial tree.
    • Other diagnostic parameters should be considered supplementary to IAR.
    • IARs are a reliable indicator for the allergic component in bronchial asthma.
