Summary

Pathologists need new skills to use artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly in diagnostics. This study proposes a new entrustable professional activity (EPA) to train pathologists for AI integration in pathology practice.

Pathologists express positive attitudes towards AI but report knowledge and skill gaps.
Need for defined competencies for responsible AI use in pathology practice.

Purpose of the Study:

Assess necessary entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and competencies for pathologists using AI.
Identify skill gaps in current pathology training for AI integration.
Propose a new EPA to prepare pathologists for AI in diagnostics.

Main Methods:

Literature review of AI in pathology and radiology.
Analysis of current pathologist EPAs and competencies.
Identification of new competencies required for AI use and human-AI interaction.

Main Results:

Most current pathologist EPAs remain relevant for AI-assisted diagnostics.
New competencies in technology evaluation, implementation, and human-AI interaction are essential.
Current EPAs inadequately address training for technology evaluation and implementation.

Conclusions:

Pathology training must evolve to include AI-specific competencies.
A new EPA, "using AI in diagnostic pathology practice," is proposed.
This EPA and its competencies will equip future pathologists for the AI era.
