One of the most exciting new capabilities in Smart Manufacturing (SM) is the provisioning of manufacturing services as unbundled "apps," which could be significantly more flexible and less expensive to use than the current generation of monolithic manufacturing applications. However, bundling and integrating heterogeneous apps in the form of integrated services is not a trivial job. Currently, many technology and standards efforts address parts of the solutions for this vision and other parts of the solutions have yet to be addressed or might not have even been identified. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has initiated a research and development program to advance science and engineering towards the vision of composable SM systems. In April 2016, NIST hosted a workshop, called Drilling down on Smart Manufacturing -- Enabling Composable Apps, to start working with industry and academia on the technical and standards-based solutions that will be needed. This paper describes the topics covered and reports on key outcomes of this workshop.
