    Summary

Most patients with bilateral below-knee amputations due to atherosclerosis can successfully use prostheses. Restorative efforts are justified by good survival rates and low revision needs in these amputees.

    Area of Science:

    • Medicine
    • Rehabilitation Medicine
    • Prosthetics

    Background:

    • Bilateral below-knee amputations present unique challenges for patients and healthcare providers.
    • Understanding factors influencing outcomes is crucial for effective management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate outcomes in patients with bilateral below-knee amputations.
    • To identify factors affecting prosthesis use, survival, and stump revisions.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective assessment of 80 bilateral below-knee amputee patients.
    • Analysis of etiology, comorbidities, time between amputations, prosthesis use, and survival.

    Main Results:

    • Atherosclerosis was the primary cause in 63 patients, with high rates of diabetes and hypertension.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • 71% of atherosclerotic amputees achieved functional prosthesis use.
  • Mental status significantly impacted outcomes in non-atherosclerotic amputees.
  • Conclusions:

    • Most atherosclerotic bilateral below-knee amputees can achieve functional prosthesis use.
    • Restorative efforts are supported by favorable survival and low revision rates.
    • Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for managing these complex cases.
